"Please don’t re-traumatize me; I’ve been through a lot."

As many are and have suffered from all types of traumatic events/experiences, it is important for those who are there to help. As a Skilled Helper and Agent of Change, I am often keenly aware of how my own behaviors can severely affect another.

“Please don’t dismiss my pain, for it is very real, and I’ve survived a lot to get here.”

It is also important that I make myself available to help those in need. There have been many times over the course of my career where something has been said in a group setting that led to someone pulling me to the side to talk. Although setting regular appointments is important, I feel what is even more important is listening to the person in need of a compassionate ear. Be “present” when others are sharing their pain. Meaning, give them your undivided attention because you never know what it takes for someone, anyone to talk about “it.”

Treating others the way you want to be treated is the cornerstone for treatment providers. We all want to be treated with dignity and respect. Mankind needs to be treated well and with kindness for our well-being. Part of the recovery process is to be covered. Meaning, don’t expose me to anymore harsh treatment, especially given it took some "doing" to get me out of hiding.
